The new service OnlyFake, utilizing artificial intelligence to create fake driver’s licenses and passports, has raised concerns in the cryptocurrency industry. For $15, the service offers realistic forgeries of documents from 26 countries, including the USA, Canada, and EU countries, accepting payment in cryptocurrencies through Coinbase. These fake documents are reportedly successful in passing KYC checks on various cryptocurrency exchanges, as confirmed by messages in Telegram channels and reports of successful verification bypass on platforms like OKX.
The service has become possible thanks to advanced technologies that can generate fake documents with a high degree of realism within minutes. Users can upload their own photos or choose from a provided library, creating identifications that are difficult to distinguish from the real ones. This opens doors for fraudsters and hackers who can use these documents for anonymous access to financial services, complicating their prosecution and identification process.
The problem of fake documents is exacerbated by the ability to forge image metadata, including GPS coordinates and photo creation time, making the detection of fakes even more challenging. This raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of current identity verification methods, especially in light of the growing use of deep fakes, which can deceive even video verification, previously considered a reliable method of identification.
